Education is Important
Dr. Phillips High School opened its doors in 1987. Located on Turkey Lake Road north of Wallace Road and noticeable by visiting tourists spending the day at Universal Studios directly across the street. Students say some classrooms you can hear the faint screams of roller coaster riders, great that’s all a wandering mind needs.
Below are great sites filled with Central Florida School Grades and Resources.
The Facilities
The campus is on 80 acres located inside the Orlando city limits.
Doctor Phillips High School Academics
Advancement Via Individual Determination is an elective for average students who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These students are capable of completing rigorous curriculum, but are falling short of their potential. AVID puts them on the college track. Students enroll not only in our school’s toughest classes, such as honors and Advanced Placement but also in the AVID elective.
The Business Academy (BA) is for students interested in enrolling in the College of Business at a university, majoring in some area of business in a community college, wanting to start their own business, or looking for job-entry skills. The academy is designed to provide academic and technical training through a team of teachers working cooperatively to integrate and make the curriculum relevant to today’s workplace.
The CIS Magnet addresses the ever-growing need for cultural awareness and practical ability to succeed in a diverse and multi-ethnic world. CIS students develop the skills, attain the knowledge, and cultivate an attitude of cross-cultural awareness that will assist them in whatever they pursue in their future. The four-year program is an Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum which offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and the possibility of receiving college credit for successful performance on the national AP exams.
All CIS students take CIS pre-AP English Honors in the ninth and tenth grades, where they develop the thinking, analytical, and writing skills that will prepare them for the AP classes. In addition to the specialized curriculum, education is enhanced through many stimulating activities, guest speakers, hosting international students and participating in study-travel programs abroad.
The Visual and Performing Arts Magnet (VPA) provides a structured curriculum enhanced with both academic and career-related opportunities. Students look forward to mastering the skills in their chosen arts area after selecting a course of study in one of five strands: art, dance, music, theatre, or TV production. Courses are taught by an outstanding staff who supplement instruction with nationally known guest artists and local specialists, artists, choreographers, potters, dancers, casting agents, directors, and many others.
Teachers seek the most current speakers and field trip opportunities to allow students a practical look at today’s ever-growing world of arts and entertainment. Because of increased graduation requirements, some students may need to complete courses in summer school or through Virtual School. All academics meet the Florida Academic Scholarship Program requirements. Students in some strands may qualify for Gold Seal Scholarships or Tech Prep credit.
The Medical Academy (MA) is designed to motivate students for a future in the expanding area of medicine and health care related fields. The purpose is to allow students the opportunity to examine various medical professions and acquire a foundation of knowledge necessary for all medical personnel.
The Medical Academy was developed for students planning to attend a four-year university, a community college, or a technical center majoring in a medically related career. The Medical Academy has a group of teachers working together as a team to provide quality academic and health-related instruction.
